Expressions of Interest in hosting the 9th Conference on Wind Energy and Wildlife in 2027

Dear members of the CWW Community,

The Scientific Advisory Body (SAC) for the Conference on Wind Energy and Wildlife are pleased to announce this Expression of Interest (EOI) for hosting the 9th CWW Conference.  Organizing and hosting the CWW Conference is a large undertaking but also an extremely rewarding enterprise.  Parties interested in hosting the event must be prepared to invest significant time and resources in conference planning, organizing a venue and logistics, forming an Organizing Committee and a Scientific Advisory Committee, securing sponsors and other tasks.  Most importantly, the hosts for CWW must pledge to maintain the spirit and continuity of CWW – prioritizing our focus on onshore and offshore wind-energy science while creating opportunities for international collaboration, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and fostering community amongst the diverse CWW participants - students and professional researchers, nature conservation organization members, consultants and practitioners, solutions/technology developers, industry representatives and experts, and regulators.

While each CWW has continuity in some topics and themes – for example, all have included content related to species-specific and population responses to wind energy - each CWW has had unique aspects related to each location and emerging scientific topics and trends.  We fully anticipate this pattern to continue and for the 9thconference to continue CWW’s positive - and not-for-profit impact internationally.

All eight of the CWW conferences have taken place in Europe, however, the SAC is open to review EOIs from groups in countries outside of Europe.  Given the size of the event is now roughly 800 in-person attendees plus virtual attendees, a modern conference venue with good transportation links and facilities is a must.  Traditionally CWW has occurred in September and this timing generally works for our participants.  Consortium of organizations are welcome and are expected. Hosts must adhere to the current Terms of Reference (ToR) for CWW.

The call for EOI to organize the next CWW is open until 31 July 2025.  Parties submitting EOIs will be provided with copies of the CWW ToRs for reference and serious EOIs will have access to discuss aspects of conference organization with members of the current SAC and Organizing Committee.  The successful host will be informed in August 2025 and we plan on announcing the host of the 9th CWW during the closing ceremony for the 8th Conference on 11th September 2025.  A representative from the new host will be asked to deliver a presentation on the early-stage plan for the 9th conference, as well as remarks on the wind energy and biodiversity topics most relevant for the location of the next conference.

To submit your application, please first send an email with details of your project to the email address info@cww2025.org, quoting the prefix [CWW2027].  A member of the current CWW team will then respond and provide copies of the ToRs for your reference.  Once you have received the ToRs serious parties may request a Q&A session with a member of the current CWW team.   If you are still serious about hosting the 9th CWW, then you will need to submit a short EOI proposal for the SAC to review.  The form of your application is free, but it must be concise.  Aspects to address in the EOI include:

  • Introduction of all institutional members of the proposed Organizing Committee, i.e., all consortium members collaborating to host the 9th CWW
  • Brief overview of key leads who will be involved in organizing the event
  • Context on why the location of the event would be interesting and relevant for the conference audience; note, it is not necessary to specifically identify the city at this stage, though it may be advantageous
  • Preliminary information on potential event locations; for example, potential conference venues.  Note, hosts would not be expected to reserve the venue at this stage or confirm the specific dates.
  • Confirmation that the hosts understand and agree to the ToRs
  • Key assumptions or uncertainties
  • Brief outline of the first steps you would take in organizing the event and timeframes.

The SAC will then review all EOIs in early August and may request interviews with some prospective hosts before a final decision is made and the 9th CWW host is confirmed.  The SAC will work with the proposed host on planning for their closing ceremony presentation at the 8th CWW.

Please contact the CWW team if you have any questions or need clarification (contact by email, at the address info@cww2025.org, using the prefix [CWW2027]).

On behalf of the entire CWW team, many thanks for all your interest in hosting the next Conference on Wind Energy and Wildlife.

Yours truly,
